Privacy Policy
1. At a glance
Gloss has no sign-up, and we run no server of our own.
Your recordings, lecture PDFs, transcripts and notes are stored only on your devices and in your own iCloud.
Only when you make AI notes or ask a question are the transcript text and slide content sent, to the AI company you connected yourself (Anthropic or OpenAI). The audio recording itself is never sent.
Only if you turn on usage statistics, anonymous usage numbers (such as recording length and how often features are used) are sent. No lecture content is included.
2. What stays on your device
Using the app creates the following, stored on your device. We can’t see any of it.
- Recordings, and the pages you turned while recording and when
- The lecture PDFs you open
- Transcripts (made by the on-device speech model) and your edits to them
- AI notes, your own handwriting, Ask tab conversations and per-subject memos
- Settings. API keys are kept in your device’s Keychain and never sent to us.
With iCloud sync, this data is stored in the iCloud of your own Apple Account so your devices stay in step. Apple’s Privacy Policy applies to that storage.
3. What leaves your device
Gloss talks to other services only in the cases below, and always directly from your device, never through us.
| When | To | What |
|---|---|---|
| Making AI notes, asking questions | The service you connected: Anthropic (Claude API, Claude Code) or OpenAI (API, Codex) | Transcript text, slide text and images, your questions. Gloss asks for consent once, the first time you connect. |
| iCloud sync | Apple (your own iCloud) | The note data in section 2 |
| First download of the speech model | Hugging Face | Ordinary download request data (such as IP address). No lecture content. |
| Checking for updates (Mac) | GitHub | Ordinary request data and the app version |
| Usage statistics (only if you said yes when asked) | TelemetryDeck (a German company; servers in Germany and the Netherlands) | App version; device type, OS, language, region, time zone, screen size and accessibility settings; how often features are used; recording length (in 5-minute steps) and page count; how long making notes took, whether it worked and the estimated AI cost; a random statistics ID (hashed on your device before it’s sent). No lecture or subject names, slides, recordings, transcripts, notes, questions or file names, and IP addresses are not stored. |
| TestFlight beta (iPhone) | Apple | Crash reports and beta feedback you choose to share, under Apple’s TestFlight terms |
| Send Feedback | Our email | The email you write, plus app version and device type |
What you send to an AI company is handled under that company’s policy: Anthropic Privacy Policy, OpenAI Privacy Policy.
Transfers abroad
If you turn on usage statistics, they are sent abroad as follows.
- Recipient: TelemetryDeck GmbH (privacy policy)
- Country: Germany (servers in Germany and the Netherlands)
- When and how: over the internet, in batches, while you use the app with statistics on
- What: the usage statistics items in the table above
- Why: to learn how many people use which features and how much, so we can improve the app and plan AI pricing
- How long: see section 5
- To say no: choose “Don’t Send” when asked, or turn off Settings → General → Usage Statistics. Every feature of the app keeps working.
AI notes and questions are not transferred by us: your device sends them straight to the account you connected at a US company (Anthropic or OpenAI).
4. What we don’t collect
We don’t collect your name, email (except feedback you send), location, contacts or advertising identifiers. Gloss contains no advertising tools. Usage statistics are sent only if you say yes when the app asks once, and you can turn them off any time in Settings → General → Usage Statistics. Turning them off also deletes the statistics ID on your device. Statistics are never used to track you across other apps or websites.
This website counts visits and popular pages with Cloudflare Web Analytics. It uses no cookies and keeps nothing that identifies visitors.
5. Keeping and deleting
Deleting a note removes it from your device and iCloud right away, and it can’t be recovered. Deleting the app removes its data from that device; anything left in iCloud can be removed from iCloud storage settings on your iPhone or Mac. Feedback emails are kept only as long as needed to reply and improve the app.
Usage statistics are kept by TelemetryDeck, which currently has no fixed deletion schedule (it says it expects to delete them after 7 to 10 years). Because the statistics ID is hashed on your device, neither we nor TelemetryDeck can tell whose records are whose, so statistics already sent can’t be deleted for one person. Once you turn statistics off, nothing more is sent.
6. When you record
Lecture recordings can include the voices of your professor and other students. Follow your school’s and course’s recording rules, use recordings and notes for your own study only, and don’t share or publish them.
7. Children
Gloss is made for university students and adults. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 14, or under the minimum age where you live.
8. Changes
When this policy changes, we’ll post it here with a new effective date, and note important changes in the app’s release notes.
